TRI HITA KIRANA in Ubud - For many years, Bali’s food supply was entirely self-sustainable. Increases in population along with the introduction of conventional farming practices have led to the deterioration of the interlinked relationship of Tri Hita Karana. Today, Bali often relies solely on other countries for some fruits and vegetables. Yayasan Tri Hita Karana Bali is looking to change this situation and restore a harmonious relationship between people to people, people to nature and people to God. Tri Hita Karana is made up of people from different parts of the world, coming from different economic and social backgrounds. We are farmers, students, educators, professionals, volunteers, children, adults, activists, and change-makers. Our bond is our love for Bali and our mission: To aid in the development of Bali through participation, equity, empowerment and effective farming and educational practices. Tri Hita Karana Permaculture Center in Pejeng is a project of the US based non-profit THE LIVING WISDOM and Bali based TRI HITA KARANA foundation in partnership with Pak Tjokorda Agung, the center exists to promote the continuation of traditional Balinese agricultural practices and unite them with sustainable technologies from the realm of permaculture. It is a place where people of all ages, both Balinese and from across the globe come together united by love for the earth in educational programs of earth stewardship. The center will have an integrated waste management system with human and animal manures creating methane for bio-gas powered generators, stoves and water heaters and the slurry feeding worm farms which create aerobic compost. All water will be filtered with wastewater gardens and reused in toilets, to water gardens or fed to a fresh water seafood pond. These waste management systems that take problems and turn them into solutions will be the focus of the educational programs. Additionally the center will be a base for outreach projects like eco-education programs for schools with the creation of gardens, fruit tree orchards and programs for villages with waste management systems that offer income for collecting and saving all trash and compost systems for organic waste. One of the first schools in Bali, Sanur Independent School has stayed where it was for many years - a good quality education for your children here in Bali. The atmosphere in the school is very nice and the kids love their school. School rates are far more lower than in many other schools. Each year, the school organized special activities for the children. Additional the school organizes the transport of the kids from Seminyak and back, which is a big plus for many parents. PONDOK PEKAK - I know the place for many years and never realized how many great things they doing. Laurie Billington, the owner of the Pondok Pekak, liked the idea that we put Bali for Kids.com together and is now quite happy to have the Pondok pekak with lots of activities on it. Unfortunately money is always an issue for the Pondok Pekak - they just had to stop the open Gamelan Classes for the kids, as there is no money to pay the teacher. Very sad as they have wonderful instruments there and many kids these days cannot afford to pay a teacher. If the kids don't learn playing Gamelan who will play in the temples? Who will play at the performances? Can you imagine a Bali without the ding-dong of the Gamelan? The SMILE SHOP and YAYASAN SENYUM are operating now a few months. Their great second hand shop in Ubud - TOKO SMILE - is raising money to pay many poor people with cranio-facial disabilities operations. I like the idea of simple generating money without the loose of administration, etc. The funny ladies at the SMILE SHOP are all volunteers and you are very welcome to join so the shop can open its doors longer and can sell more. Seeing the incredible before/after pictures of kids which got operations from the Yayasan Senyum - it is absolutely heard-warming. I met Mary Northmore, one of the YAYASAN SENYUM ladies at the Garlic Club Bazar in Seminyak. She told me that they really doing well with the help of people donating brand new or second hand items for sell at the shop. Damien is traveling around Australia and Asia for the last few years to help Orphans. ZUKUNFT FUER KINDER (Future for Children) is a great project started by some Swiss people. The base is self-help. Get the moms working, get the kids in school and help them all to a better life. Trekking for tourists up in the rural and poor villages of northern Bali. As I have been living up there I know it is really beautiful, the trekking stunning. The trip is only for really fit people and not for children under 10 years, but it will blow away your teens. A wonderful picnic later on the beach and meet the real Bali folks. SKOEBI-DO in Canggu has itself established as one of the real good play groups for your very little one in Canggu area. Around 40 kids already enjoy playing with their friends, learn with experienced teachers and have each day a new fun thing to do. Many teachers from the old, now closed Munchkins moved to Skoebi-do, so parents who had their first child with them and now have a second one ready for playgroup will remember some of the teachers. Yanti, who is in charge of organizing the playgroup told me that the kids really love to come to Skoebi-do and the bonding between the kids is really good. Special activities each day, like gardening day, swimming in a little pool or art projects motivate the kids to keep going to Skoebi-do. Daily, as well as short term kids are welcome, kids are from all over the world, but teaching language is english. BALI BIRD PARK in Singapadu is one of Bali's classic. For kids it is a paradise and it is one day of full excitement watching the birds and even touching them. The flight shows are brilliant and the birds well trained. The 3D cinema is the only one I know in Bali and our first visit there was really exciting. Throughout the park you can watch hundreds of Birds, many of them free. There is a naughty Kakadu screaming around, the birds to hold and put on your head is a real experience for kids and my favorite is their white peacock, who is so cool, that each time I come there he is showing of his wonderful tail. Most kids also love to watch the Flamingoes - to funny how they manage to sleep on one leg. So, bring your kids to the Bali Bird Park, the will always remember the outstanding experience. HAMANDAH DRUMMING BIRTHDAY PARTIES has set up a new fantastic program for kids to drum though their birthday. The team of Hamandah Drumming is now already wellknown in Bali.
