BALI STREET KIDS FOUNDATION is the theme of our year 2010. Our goal is to change minds and help those kids - Now and in the future. So now finally we got them on our Social Page and we hope more and more of you will help them to keep going and support those Balinese kids who need our help most. Ibu Putu, the founder, is almost alone in her work to get those kids a better life. Just look at the picture next to this article. Those kids once were standing on the side of the road bagging. Today they all go to school, live in a home, are save from adults doing them harm, learn skills they never learned before. Just look at those happy smiles... and it is not so difficult to help. If all of us help a little bit together and we all raise awareness more kids will have a better future and will not stand on the side of the road begging anymore. STARFISH LANGUAGE CENTER in Ubud is calling itself a Learning Center with a big heart and is dedicated to teach Indonesians English and English speaking students Indonesian, Japanese, French and Spanish. Starfish Language Center is a part of Yayasan Tri Hata Kirana in Ubud. As a non profit organization SLC generates income via classes given to hotel and restaurants staff, as well as private and class lessons for those who can afford it. This way for underprivileged Balinese children the classes are free. Starfish Language Center focuses on interactive learning, learning a language by fun is the goal of each class. For many children this is the only way to be able to learn English and have a chance later in live to get a proper job with a decent income. IDEP FOUNDATION in Ubud is a big foundation dedicated to help in disasters, such as now in Java with the eruption of Mound Merapi or back to the big tsunami in Aceh. IDEP Foundations brings quick help to those who need it in hard situations. But IDEP does more, IDEP educates local farmers about new/old ways of farming. IDEP states: "Helping people to solve their own problems!" IDEP goes for example into schools and helps the kids to set up a garden with nice food, within 3 months the children can eat out of their school garden. Those are incredible programs. Today, education and understanding the issue is the base of all major changes we can indicate. Programs as helping to set up a waste water garden and seed saving to protect our future from GMO foods, is a fundamental work at IDEP. When I was going though IDEP's website www.idepfoundation.org. I was extremely surprised at the big amount of work they contribute to the Indonesian community. Right now IDEP helps families in camps over in Java to deal with the difficult situation of loosing their homes. HOUSE OF ALAIA in Canggu is a great new place for kids to learn handicraft skills such as silversmithing, painting and beadwork. In a great designed studio kids can do their own piece of jewels, a wonderful skill which can lead your child into a career of one of the highest handicrafts around the world. Bali is the perfect place to learn silversmithing, as it is a craft very wide spread around the island. Many famous Jewels came here to produce their collections. House of Alaia runs their own production and their teachers are great skilled in teaching the kids first the basics and than build them up over a period of time. Now House of Alaia offers regular classes each week to join, so it is perfect for kids living here in Bali who a interested in art. Drawing classes in acrylic and water colors can be booked in advance too. I have seen wonderful paintings made from kids on my visit and a bunch of kids I know had a great 2 days experience at House of Alaia, so proud they made wonderful pendants and rings. CARE FOR BALI KIDS ORPHANAGE in Denpasar was founded in loving memory of Jodie O’Shea, who was a young Australian woman who tragically died after the bombing in 2002. The Jodie O’Shea Orphanage is a non profit organization and we depend solely on donations from the kindness of others to support the children’s needs. We strive for our children to be healthy, loved and have agood education and be able to go out into the workforce as happy, independent adults We have 54 children from various parts of Indonesia, many from the arid island of Sumba either with no parents or from families who are just too poor and unable to feed and educate the children themselves. So far the year has been busy. Several new children have arrived & a couple of our older children are now in the workforce. Asnat is working for KTI as a jewelry designer and very happy with her new position. Jener graduated from his Hotel Studies at University and has just started working for Desa Seni Resort. We are so proud of both Asnat and Jener and wish them every success for the future. We are very grateful to everyone who supports us with work training programmes, as this is such an important time for the older children and we truly do need all the help that we can get. Baby Sophia joined our family 2 days after she was born. Her mother was too poor to keep her. Now Sophia is gaining weight at a rapid pace and adored by everyone. School has just started and our little Risky is now attending kindergarten at Widya Puspita “Flower of Knowledge Kindergarten”in Canggu. We always welcome visitors and do appreciate donations of food such as milk, fresh fruit, vegetables, chicken, meat, rice etc. Food costs are high and it is vital to give the children good nutrition. DIJON in Kuta as been with us before and was on my wish list for a long time. Briefly I went into Dijon and had my mouth wide open. Dijon has a special corner with one of my favorite Indonesian brands: Javara. A company in Java producing high quality organic products such as black rice, mungo beans, herbs and spices. Their products are outstanding good and there, at Dijon I found them all. So if you are looking for some high quality organic products for your family, specially if you are living gluten free, check out the little Javara temple Dijon has created. Outside the Javara temple you find many other high quality gourmet foods, such as Dijon's rum balls, which are famous around Bali. I got told people buy boxes of them to bring them back home. YELLOW COCO CREATIVE NEST in Nyuh Kuning Ubud has just opened and offers great after school programs for kids as well as special kids programs and parties for families. Their big opening party was on October 2nd with lots of fun with shadow puppet plays and potluck. Afternoon program at Yellow Coco Creative Nest includes such great things like Halloween mask making or Drumming and everybody is welcome to join. Founders and teachers of Yellow Coco Creative Nest aim from the Greenschool, where they been for 3 years. Susan's Shadow Puppet Play is legend and she has been often part of the Ubud Reader and Writer Festival. So Yellow Coco Creative Nest offers right now two wonderful classes for kids: Clay Work and Shadow Puppet Play, both classes are wonderful ways for kids to develop creative and expressive skills and the shadow puppets at Yellow Coco Creative Nest are wonderfully made from natural materials and legend. Yellow Coco Creative Nest uses either natural or recycled items for their kids creations and I think this is really good way how to educate children. TAMANAK - (by Tamanak) Tamanak is something which doesn't’t yet exist: a place where the kids of Sayan (Ubud-Bali) and from the neighboring villages (but also the children of the many expatriates living nearby) can play, be happy and socialize. Tamanak will be a fenced playground, far from cars, safe, clean, with proper outdoor games in a tropical and joyful environment. That’s why we chose a name which includes the most pertinent Indonesian words to describe the project: Taman = garden - Aman = safe - Anak = children - The concept of a playground well equipped, safe and free for children does not exist on the Balinese territory. After school the children play in backyards, in the streets or in the rice fields. We would like to offer to the kid’s community of Sayan (and of near by villages) a clean, safe, guarded and equipped environment with simple, but captivating outdoor games … the ones we used to play with: slides, swings, rope walls, push games and so on. The playground will be developed on 800-1000 m2 plot of land and will be freely open every day from 9.00 to 18.00 to all kids from 3 -10 years old (but children below 6 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult). Tamanak will be entirely created with sponsorships and private donations. We have formed a small group of parents and friends, people who share the same idea and who will help us in fundraising and organizing, managing and controlling Tamanak. NG or NP organizations are not directly involved because we are convinced that is better to act independently at first, when you see the possibility of creating something by your own personal initiative. Tamanak will be entirely created by sponsorships and private donations. The project will actualize as soon we will reach the amount of 15.000 euro necessary to rent the plot of land and to buy the first outdoor games and equipment. Even small amount of money here in Bali makes a difference. Noella Roos has exhibited in many cities throughout Europe and Asia and has been given painting classes for over 11 years. During the classes you will get a better understanding on composition, anatomy, knowledge of materials and colors, art styles and art history. Before every participants will receive background documentation to read. Every lesson will start with a small lecture on one of the above topics and continue to practice the taught components in our own paintings. YUKIO in Canggu is one of those places I often passed by and thought: Ah, I wish I would have them on the side... One day I passed and than the magic happened. This lovely little baby store is now with us. Yukon offers a lovely range of very nice kids clothing, from Kimono style jackets, to nice little tights for your little one. But one of the favorite things in the shop are the sleeping bags for babies and the bed covers. The materials are either from Japan or Indonesia Batik. The way they are made is special and very creative and I am very happy we finally have some sleeping bags on the site, as many parents asked me where to get them. CATERPILLARS MONTESSORI SCHOOL is located in Renon villages and brand new. They all new building is wonderful located and equipped with the latest and most creative toys. Owner Eleinna Sutandar Anderson was an Montessori child herself and runs 7 more Montessori Schools in Jakarta, so plenty of experience about running schools. Now she opened one Montessori School here in Bali and I am pretty sure it will not be her last one.
