CALENDAR of EVENTS  
From BLOO LAGOON, BALI, 2008

The following calendar notes some of the most interesting events in Bali and those close to Bloo Lagoon.  There are hundreds of ceremonies in Bali and often you will find yourself meeting a procession. The Balinese are very open and if you are correctly dressed in Balinese ceremony clothes you will are welcome to join in. Usually photography is allowed except in some very sacred ceremonies.  When we hear of special ceremonies we shall organize transport and a guide for you. 
The ceremonies at both Tenganan villages are very different to others in Bali as they are of the Bali Aga ( the original Balinese inhabitants ) and luckily Bloo Lagoon is very close so please take these opportunities to visit.    For those seriously interested in the arts the Bali Arts Festival has performances every day in June. As it is organized in a Balinese way, you should always check the latest program and be ready for changes.


6 May             Bali Aga TENGANAN – near CandiDasa and Bloo Lagoon
USABA Kapat ceremony, - Ritual of the fourth month with full moon ceremony will be held at Dalem Pengastulan temple on May 7th ~ May 8nd. This Temple had relationship with Dalem Pengastulan temple in Bedahulu village Gianyar Regency.


17 May           Throughout Bali Hindus celebrate Tumpek Wayang to thank to God for blessing them with arts and handycrafts.
- Pura Pedharman Dalem Sukawati, Pedharman Menguwi, Pedharman Kaba-kaba, Pedharman Bakas and Pedharman Dinasti Dalem Sri Aji Kresna Kepakisan at Besakih complex - Rendang district. Ceremony start at 10.00 am.


21 May           - Pura Penataran Agung Teluk, Padangbai - Ceremony at 10.00 am
- Pura Gowa Raja, Basukian and Puncak Pemeneh, Besakih complex - Rendang district. Ceremony at 10.00 am.
- Pura Pasek Preteka Pakendelan and Dadia Pasek Gelgel, Dukuh - Sidemen district. Ceremonies start at 03.00pm.


22-31 May     PADANGBAI FESTIVAL
There will be a lot of competions, such as Jukung competition, balinese dance, Baleganjur, penjor etc.  And Also Balinese Arts Exchibition of Karangasem Regency.

27 May           Sanghyang Dedari dance start at 08.00 pm. I think this is a trance dance done by young girls. Pura Pemaksan bukit buluh Br. Gunaksa, Ababi - Abang.


7 June           Throughout Bali, Saraswati day is the day to celebrate knowledge and literature at the home and all school.


8 June           The beach or spring water at Karangasem. Banyu Pinaruh procession after Saraswati celebration, to cleanse and purify themselve start at 05.00 - 10.00 am.


9 June           Pura Desa, Linggawana Kertha Mandala - Abang district.
Ceremony accompanied by Rejang Dewe, Wewalen and Baris Gede dances start at 02.00 pm.


11 June           Throughout Bali, Pagerwesi celebration is to thank to Sanghyang Pramesti Guru for retaining himself from the bad influences.


18 June         Pura Masceti, Gegelang - Manggis district. Usaba Emping ceremony


21 june          - Throughout Bali by Hindus people, Tumpek Landep celebration is to thank to Sanghyang Pasupati due to gave the strength, powerful and sharpness. Cleaning and blessing of metal objects including weapons/ car and computer.
- Pura Ida Ratu Pande, Pura Besakih complex - Rendang district, Pura Dalem, Gegelang - Manggis district. Ceremony start at 10.00 am.
- Apit Yeh - Manggis district, ceremony accompanied by sacred Barong dance performed at 06.00 pm.


14 June – 12 July BALI ARTS FESTIVAL
One month festival, of the best art and dancers from all of Bali and some international performance.

 BALI AGA DESA TENGANAN – MANGGIS DISTRICT
There are two Bali Aga villages which have similar ceremonies at different dates, also see the program for Tenganan DAUH TUKAD
Close to Bloo Lagoon / Candidasa

Usaba Kelima/ Sambah ceremony,
Tenganan biggest cultural event throughout the year, a whole month celebrations from May 24th until June 25th
24th May         Mamiut is ritual held at all village's Temple to ask for safety and success for the big ceremony.
26 May           - Meeting and ritual held at Puseh Sembangan temple attended by the Temple's adherents, cheered with Selonding music.
30 May           - Mati Ombo Sanghyang is special event when Deities abide at Bale Agung for three days. The event commenced with slaughtering a buffalo at 12.00 am, accompanied by Selonding music preceded by procession to Bale Agung at 05.00 pm.
2 June           - Last day of Mati Ombo Sanghyang when the Deities return in procession to Raja Purana temple at 06.00 pm while the ancient swing is set up, cheered with Selonding music.
4 June           - A group of maidens collect holy water from the public bathing place, while the others pray at Batu Keben temple and Telaga temple. The ancient swing is purified, blessed and then tried while Selonding music cheers the atmosphere. This event followed by special ceremony for boys who officially accepted as "calon teruna" (bachelor of the village)
5 June           - Second day of collecting holy water while the men attend the meeting. This event followed by boys and girls swinging together on the ancient swing
6 June           “Mulan Saat” a special event which starts with the woman who are dressed up in their finest, traditional ikat and girinseng dress at 09.00 am.
The main ceremony start at 01.00 pm accompanied by Abwang dance performed at Bale Agung at 12.00 am and ends with the Selonding group playing music around the village.
7 June           - "Mulan Daha" special event for maidens only, with Abwang dance performed in front of Petemu Kaja (north hall), Patemu Tengah (centre hall) and Kelod (south) at 06.00 pm, while Selonding music is played by bachelors marching around the village at 08.00 pm.
9 June           - "Ngelawad", krama desa truna of Temu Kelod and Jero Pasek praying and present Ngelawad offerings at Pura's; Puseh Sembangan, Petung and Batan Cagi temples.
9 June           - Symbolic "Makare" without actual fighting at Bale Agung with Gambang music.
9 June           - "Muran Desa" the special event held in every three years for the whole village consists a series of rituals like purification and sacrificial ceremonies focused at Bale Agung, starts from 4.00 pm until late at night with Selonding music cheering the atmosphere. Attended by all villagers with their finest traditional dress.
10 June         - "Maling-malingan" (maling means the thief) is special event where two young man representing their respective groups steal some meat available at Bale Agung. When they finally captures by the villagers after being chased a couple of time, then they dress up with old banana leaves clothes, flower, necklace of cow bell and then carried along the village roads (to show that criminal behavior is not tolerated). This funny and cheerful event finally ends with Abwang dance performed by the maidens at Patemu. "Makare-kare" (duel between group of young man each armed with two pieces of thorny pandanous leaves and pleated rattan as the armor), held at Bale Agung at 04.00 pm.
11 June         - "Mabwang Kala" (exorcizing evil spirits) is special event started with Abwang
                        dance performed in front of Patemu residence block.
followed with moving around the Patemu and ended up with chanting holy hymn together at 08.00 pm. Symbolical Makare-kare held at Bale Agung at 04.00 pm
11 June         - "Muran teruna" (special event for bachelors) held every three years in a whole day long which consist of various activities done by village's bachelors w/ main program is selecting a maiden to be their respective partner to attend the series of ceremony.
13 June         - "Makare-kare at Patemu Kelod" at 04.00 pm followed by maidens and little girls in complete traditional dress swinging on the old spinning chair (ancient swing) at 06.00 pm and ended by praying in Pura Banjar.
14 June         - "Makare-kare in Petemu Kaja" (duel among a group of men each armed with two pieces of thorny pandanous leaves and plated rattan as the armor) as part of the rituals along noon while the maidens praying in village's temple at around 04.00 pm.
15 June         - "Makare-kare Patemu Tengah/ Pengrame" (Pandanus Fighting) preceded with procession around the village by playing music, Rejang and Abwang dances. "Makare-kare" welcome anybody or stranger to participate in with stress put on the dancing characteristic which nobody loose or win at 11.00 am. Wound got during the duel which could be easily good with traditional medicine. This event followed by the series of rituals and chanting hymns, sacred performances of Rejang and Kris dances at 04.00 pm. The entire event is ended by Abwang dance performance and ritual at Subak Daha at 09.00 pm.
16 June         - Prayer held at Banjar temple with Rejang dance and Selonding music at 06.00 am. Roasting pig followed by Abwang dance are held at Subak Daha, the participant are the village's bachelors and maidens at 09.00 pm.
25 June         Nyajah" the closing ceremony of Usaba Sambah attended by whole villagers according to their respective social functions in the community.


15-17 July     Pura Bale Agung, Bugbug – Karangasem Aci sumbu/ Usaba Manggung ceremony accompanied by Rejang dance (15 july), Abwang, Pendet and Daratan dances (16-17 july).


15-19 July     Pura Puseh, Asak - Karangasem district.
Usaba Sumbu ceremony, with the following events:
- 15 July, Bangun sumbu kelod and Medewa saksi start at 09.00 am.
- 16 July, Ida Bethara Mesolah/ God dancing at 09.00 am.
- 17-18 July, procession accompanied by Abuang Teruna, Pendet, Abuang Dehe and Rejang dances at 09.00am and 03.00 pm.
- 19 July, Closing ceremony/ Pengusan at 05.00am until 09.00am procession accompanied by Abuang Teruna, Pendet, Abuang Dehe and Rejang dances.


26 July           Throughout Bali by Hindus people. Tumpek Unduh/ Pengatag/ Wariga celebration to thank God for providing plants/ vegetation as source of human life.


15 July           Big ROYAL CREMATION in Ubud
We will be providing a guided tour to this event. As with all the above in Bali dates and times are flexible.  Check with Bloo Lagoon re: the latest info.


14-17 Agst    Pura Desa, Perasi - Karangasem district. Usaba Dasa ceremony accompanied by Kris, Rejang and Pendet dances start at 10.00 am.


14-17 Agst    Bugbug - Karangasem district. Ngenteg Linggih and Labuh Gentuh as the procession of Tabuh Gentuh ceremony, and cheer up by the coming God/ Bathara from Datah - Abang district.


20 August     All Bali, GALUNGAN celebration is the triumph of dharma against adharma (evil).  One of the main festivals in the Balinese year. All villages are decorated.


30 August     - Through out Bali, KUNINGAN celebration . One of the main festivals of the Balinese year.
- “Dewa Mepalu” ( Interesting Trance Dance ) in Paksebali village near Klungkung. 

JUNE 2008

THE USABA SAMBAH CEREMONY of the Bali Aga people
At TENGANAN DAUH TUKAD
Similar to the ceremony at Tenganan but fewer tourists.
We shall be providing tours guided by a villager to these ceremonies.

18 June 2008   NULAK DAMAR ceremony
At about 6 PM – the Teruna (boys) and the Daha (girls) have a procession, carrying the GODS from penyimpenan (special house where the Gods are kept) to the Bale Agung temple accompanied by the baleganjur onchestra.
At PM – the Taruna Serpaha (new members of the boys club) turn the large swings with special lamps and offerings on them. They turn the swings to the north three times and then to the South three times.
After they this ceremony is complete, they come to the Bale Banjar (the village hall) to have “ palagantung “ (9 light foods) served to them by the Krama Desa (the married men )
19 June 2008   PENAMPAHAN
Morning – the Krama Desa and Taruna slaughter pigs in preparation for an offering and feast.
20 June 2008   METEKROK ceremony
                        Morning – the Krama Desa and Taruna perform the following:

  • Pigs and Ducks are slaughtered for the offerings and feast to come and
  • Fruit bearing trees are placed in the ground. These are put in front of the Bale Banjar and Bale Agung temple.

At 3 PM – the Krama Desa have a procession, around the recently placed trees three times accompanied by the gamelan and the “ nyongnyong “ orchestra. After finishing this part of the ceremony, the Taruna Serpaha wearing a special ceremonial dress together with the older Taruna performs the same ceremony as the Krama Desa. After this procession is finished, people (usually children) who have been watching this ceremony can pick up the trees. This usually results in a friendly struggle amongst those participating.


21 June 2008   DAHA TARUNA NYAMBAH ceremony
At about 10 AM – all Taruna Serpaha go to the temple to worship.
At about 4 PM – the Krama Desa, Daha and Taruna go to pray in the penyimpenan Gegaduhan Desa (a special house where the manuscripts of the village are kept). The Taruna Serpaha turn the Daha (girls) on the large swings or ferris wheets to the North 3 time and again to the South 3 times.
AT 7 PM – the Taruna Serpaha carried on the backs of older Turunas and followed by people carrying offerings on their heads, go to the Dalem Kangin and Bale Agung temples to pray. They run as fast as they can around the Bale Agung temple and the swings three times accompanied by the sound of the gamelan gong and the “ kulkul “ (wooden  bells ).


22 June 2008   MEKARE  - KARE ceremony ( see also Tenganan 15 June )
At about 10.30 AM – people of pekarangan (on the west side of Tenganan Dauh Tukad) come to the village to pray. These villagers have adat relations. Taruna Serpaha perform the “pendet“ (welcome dance) at the Bale Agung temple.
At 12.30 PM – “Mekare-Kare” ceremony is performed by the Taruna and Krama Desa. They hold a shield in their left hand as protection and a bundle of pandanus leaves in their right hand which they use as a weapon to infict scratches on be back of their opponent. This ceremony is accompanied by the sounds of the gamelan gong. 

SAMBAH TEMPLE FESTIVAL

30 June 2008   NGEPIK ceremony
Morning – the KRAMA DESA, Taruna and the young boys slaughter pigs for offering and a feast.
At 10 AM – new members of the girls club go to the temple to worship.
At noon – the Taruna (boys) carry flowers, food and effenings and walk to the subak house to the Bale Agung temple. They carry offenings and giffs for the Taruna. This ceremony is also called the “Mejot-ejotan“ (take and give) between the boys and girls at Tenganan Dauh Tukad. After the ceremony, both the boys and girls have lunch.
At 7 PM – the Tarunas carry ( on their shoulden ) the new Daha to the temple to pray.At 9.30 PM – the BEBALANG – BALANGAN ceremony is performed at the Bale Banjars. The boys and girls do a small dance called the “Abuang”  befon a bonfre accompanied by the “nyongnyong“ orchestra.
The throw some money (coins) into the “wakul“ (bamboo box) which is placed by the bonfire. This money is a donation to the girls club. After the ceremony’s finished, the Krama Desa and Taruna have dinner.


01 July 2008    PEREJANGAN ceremony
1.  Morning            -     The Krama Desa and Taruna slaughter pigs in preparation for        offening and feast
2. At 10 AM          -     The girls perform the rejang dance at the Bale Agung Temple.
3. At 11.30 AM     -     The Krama Desa, Daha and Taruna have lunch
4. At 5.30 PM        -     The karma Desa Daha and Taruna come to the Bale Agung temple where some for them perform the pendet and rejang dance.
5. At about 7 PM   -     Praying together at the Bale Agung temple
6. At 7.30 PM        -     The Taruna (boys) holding up heir kris, run around the Bale agung three time, accompanied by the sound or the gamelan gong and the kulkul. (The tom – tom)
7. At 8.30 PM        -     The carry the gods (Nandu ceremony) around the Bale Agung temple three time, accompanied by the sound of the baleganjur orchestra.


02 July 2008    PENYINEBAN ceremony
At 5.30 PM – the Krama Desa, Daha and Taruna come to the Bale Agung Temple to worship.
At 7 PM –a procession carrying the gods from the Bale Agung Temple to the penyineban house accompanied by the baleganjur orchestra.
Dancing this temple festival the Taruna (boys) have to sleep at the Bale Agung while the Krama Desa sleep at the Bale Banjar.
