Bumi Sehat - A Million Mother June 2008 |
ON BEHALF OF MIDWIFE ROBIN LIM, AUTHOR OF AFTER THE BABY’S BIRTH, AND THE BIRTH CLINIC YAYASAN BUMI SEHAT, PLEASE READ THIS TO THE END AND TAKE ACTION IF YOUR HEART MOVES YOU TO. THEN PASS IT ON… I ASK WITH HOPE AND HUMILITY… FOR THE MOTHERS ON THE ISLAND OF BALI. A month ago I and Robin Lim was emailing me all weekend, telling me about the sudden increase in births at the clinic over the prior 2 months…there are now about 80 births/month at the Bali clinic, up from 50 last September. Between receiving babies that weekend she would email me, telling me that they had just birthed a baby on the massage table in the office, then again. It’s poignant and beautiful that her messages contain love for each mother and baby she receives, even when she’s panicked that she is out of room at the clinic. And way over-capacity. - Every day I receive a phone call from someone who has Dear Katherine... This morning we have a mom laying-in in our office on a massage table. Two in Each birth room. Two in doctor room, four in recovery that’s 11 in less than 2 days... We are clearing out three of four to go home early this morning... But it’s wild... And I am in constant stress that someone will get turned away... We had almost all first time moms yesterday – that was 6 in 14 hours. We rented Eka’s house for the new Australian Volunteers International midwife.... She has a one year posting starting in June and we get another one right away to replace her. We are working on that same deal for Aceh. Aceh – just about a baby a day now. Land... Working on it. some glitches but we know the perfect place is already in existence. I dropped my hand phone in the birth tub again. I miss you so darn darn much... It’s painful - love, robin Her message was clear to me and it left me temporarily paralyzed: we are out of room at the clinic and we need the money for a new clinic NOW. I spent that entire weekend looking into ways to raise a million dollars for Yayasan Bumi Sehat. At the same time I couldn't’t shake all the voices of all the strangers and people in my heart who call and who acheto make a difference with exactly what they have to give. I found out that it takes time, resources and knowledge that I don’t have any of, in order to get grants, apply to foundations and talk to corporation-heads for contributions. It all takes too much and it is a “job” that doesn't’t feel true to me.
I headed up to bed knowing I had failed the women and families in Bali…that I’m not a fundraiser, per se…that I had failed Robin. That was 11:45 pm on a Sunday night 4 weeks ago and I was ½ way up the stairs to go to bed, having the words in my head—“I’ve failed” when this thought was given to me from some divine source-- “I just need one million mothers to give me a dollar!” The voice came with such strength and certainty (and not from me)! It stopped me in my tracks and I KNEW that was not only the answer to Bumi Sehat, but also to all of us who want to know that we HAVE made a difference, that we have answered our heart’s longing for helping others in a significant and very personal way. It would be a way for all of us to connect and create a divine army of caring and effectiveness which alone each of us, would never be able to affect. From our newsletter 22nd July 2008: My beloved friends, We have jumped at the sun. Many, Many Mothers have spoken in the last month since launching A Million Mothers. Then so Many Mothers have launched their own Million Mothers personal campaign by spreading the word to their loving Mothers, who spread the word about the Million Mothers… on… and on… around the world and now back. Envelopes and phone calls from Holland, Norway, Japan, Israel, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Germany. Envelopes and phone calls from almost every state in the US. 344 envelopes so far. From women AND men who heard the voices of a Million Women, who emailed to their beloved friends and mothers, sisters, aunts…you know…all over the world and then back. The result is a campaign of love and open-heartedness which has moved me to tears more times this month than I can count. My assistants who come to help, do so at a time when they know the mail will come so that THEY can be the ones to open the envelopes full of your words, hope, love, generosity and passion for this project. And to count the monetary hope that arrives every day. I receive dozens of emails each day…from you all…telling me not to quit…thank you for letting you help…the news of the many different ways this has been spread with your imaginative postings around the web and your childbirth classes, newsletters, children’s stores, work place connections, cookie sales, matching corporate funds, social networking… In this email I will tell you the numbers, the progress, the future. And ask you for your continued financial help. But first I want to give you some of the voices…some of the words… Emily Padua, my assistant…and warrior of good… was with me last Wednesday and we were discussing the email update. We decided to re-open the envelopes we had received to date…all 344 of them…and find a representation of the words of encouragement we had received
IBU ROBIN: THANK YOU CHARLOTTE/IBU KATHERINE AND ALL THE MILLIONS OF MOTHERS...
This is only 27 days worth of progress! And now the future: Publicity and email updates…a new call to action…One woman AND MAN at a time. For the future here is what is coming and what is needed:* More financial donations…I leave for Bali on September 18 and would like to bring $1,000,000 with me. That means we only need to work for 2 ½ more months to raise $979,000. That is only $391,000/month until I go. (It can’t hurt to just put it out there!)
Thank you dear friends for your help and interest. It means the world to me. I read every word that is sent to me and respond as many times as time allows. In deep love and gratitude, Katherine |

Bumi Sehat Aceh Report Jan-April 2007 |
|
Thanks to the funding from Direct Relief International, Rotary, Sakthi Foundation, YKI, Trend Solutions, BBC, IDEP, Vitamin Angels, and many many generous individuals, we have been able to continue giving much needed direct relief the people of Samatiga, Meulaboh, Aceh with our medical services. Sadly the operational funds Direct Relief was able to provide last year are no longer available. Bumi Sehat is actively seeking help so that our clinic services in Aceh and in Bali will continue uninterrupted. We hope some of the stories below will show just how precious this help is and how it does directly save lives.
Here are some excerpts
from Robins Diary… April 2007
Elly's teenaged daughter, Yenni, had made the ranking necessary for her to enroll in midwifery school, and we had found a friend, Michell Smith, who would sponsor her education. Yenni guided us to "lapangan III", where over a year ago we had looked after a young woman, Rose, who had just had her 8th child, living in a tent. We found the Tsumani survivors living in this camp had received 3 X 2.5 meter wooden temporary houses from Catholic Relief Services. Sadly these people (approx. 1000 of them) had not received a food delivery for over a year!
We end this report with the sincere wish that we can carry on with our work in Aceh. |
| Bali Update… Ibu Robin… April - May 2007 |

I lost my first baby the other night... A Sumbanese woman with terrible high blood pressure came in pushing a breech out. The premie baby had interuterine growth restriction and weighed only 1.5 kilos. About 3 lbs. She was completely flat at birth... I did full CPR and got her heart to start back up. But in the 1 1/2 hours or more that Nurse Leman I worked on her... She never came around. Towards the end she seemed like she was trying to take a breath on her own. But then she died completely. I have never had one like this – who would not take to life. Her life would have been so hard – displaced parents so poor, beyond what we can imagine as poor. I went to her funeral... Simple and sweet. I have not even been able to cry about it.... They named her Tabitha.
