The Run to the Toilette - Diarrhea - by Ni Zain
Remember the last time you been down with a Bali Belly? Each good expat in Bali has experienced it at least once. But most don't understand what is actually going is on in the body when we running to the toilette endlessly. - Fact is that Diarrhea is basically a way or reaction of the body to clear out "bad matter". The more "bad matter" you got the more diarrhea you will have. For children diarrhea can become very fast critical, mostly not because of the effect of the diarrhea, but dehydration in small children can set in very fast and small children cannot deal with dehydration over a long period of time.
So first: What is happening when we have diarrhea? First you must understand the function of our digestive system. One major ingredient to digest food is BILE. Bile is essential and we produce over 3-4 liters of bile each day. Bill is released into the stomach. There it has the job to kill all non good bacteria, fungus and other stuff entering our body with food. Bile also contains enzymes to break down the food. The body is a very clever system and signals in the stomach tell the liver and gallbladder exactly how much bile has to be released. Once an invader is detected, more bile is released to kill those nasty batteries, viruses and others. In a healthy system this works very well and actually those who hardly ever suffer from Diarrhea have a pretty good functioning immune system, which is able to kill off all in the stomach. But all sorts of stuff can disturb this function and bacteria or vi rues can easy take over. Signals are than given to release more bile. Bile is very bitter and acid. If there is a lot of bile released our body reacts and says: Get it out as fast as you can. So this is how you end up with diarrhea. Sometimes a few hours can clear out a lot and we might not even feel sick at all.
We all know the saying: I ate something wrong and you know the next go to the toilette will be different. But almost each time we feel better once it is out. Small children have not build up a very good immune system yet, this is why very often little children get very fast diarrhea or vomit. Vomit is the answer of the stomach of the release of a high amount of bile. Vomiting is a good way of protecting the body to absorb bad substances.
So now understanding how diarrhea is working, you understand why it is a very bad idea to stop the process of diarrhea. This way you would keep the bad in your body, where it can do more harm than on a fast way though. With little or even bigger children it is important to watch water levels in the body. You can easy do this by pulling skin off the arm and see how fast it goes back into place. If it goes back fast, water levels are very likely okay, if it takes long, fast care must be taken.
From my own experience in the past, I have learned, that waiting too long for the input of water can cause major problems. I recall one time about 15 years ago, where I was not able to get enough liquid down and I decided to go to the next hospital to get an infusion. After 3 hours on the dripper I felt far better and after 5 hours I was able to go home again without using any medication. Infusions only contain of special treated water solution. I have seen similar cases often in dengue fever cases, where dehydration is the major cause of dead. So better a few hours earlier to the hospital and getting a dripper than too late and having an emergency.
Another recommendation I give always to all around me and I always follow this too in case of a bad tummy. I drink lots of fruit juices, eat rich food, such as vegetable soups made with turmeric, ginger, lots of garlic and onion and fresh herbs. This seams like the total opposite of what you would get in a hospital. But the high nutrient and vitamin intake will help the body to fight of the invaders much more easy than on plain crackers and white rice and plain water. Stay totally away from dairy and white sugar.
Many years ago, I would be hit about once a month with a bad case of diarrhea. For the last 7 years I managed to kick them fast off. My last case is more than 1 year ago. On the other hand I have sometimes a funny bowl movement if I have been eating out. Unfortunately sometimes we cannot avoid eating out sometimes. It is not always the bacteria that makes us feel sick. Many times it is simply the overload of chemicals in a meal. About 2 months ago I ate in a restaurant in Seminyak. Not one of the famous ones, but I had a meeting and was hungry. Within 15 minutes after the meal I felt funny, got a headache. 30 minutes after I developed a bad rush. 45 minutes after I hardly could breath anymore. Luckily by that time I was home. I sent my staff for some antihistamine. 5 minutes after taking it, I was vomiting the whole meal out. My stomach felt better and the rush vanished. I asked for a good meal at home and 1 hour after I was back to normal again. I strongly believe this reaction was caused not from a food allergies, but from chemicals in the meal. My system just was totally overloaded, but reacted in rejecting. Luckily all came out.
So the next step: How can I prevent getting diarrhea? Principal it is easy. First of all eat well. High nutrients food makes your immune system stronger. Keep your tummy clean, which is easy by avoiding dairy products, bad oils, junk food and wheat. Use Colloidal Silver and homeopathic to treat diarrhea from the base, by attacking the virus and bacteria causing it, rather than stopping the diarrhea. I have used with big success also Chinese Poo Chai Pills, but lately I was told in some countries they were pulled of the market. I can only explain this, to the bottom line that it is a free available remedy and might have been overused from people. Just as any other thing out there... I will still take it in the future, as I am using it in a one time dose, or for children only several little pills. But I can imagine that in bad cases of diarrhea people might have taken 5-6 doses and this might have really bad effects on the body. - Take a good rest and drink lots of water, so you body can produce any bile. For children do the same, make sure they eat and drink and if if you spoon them. Means take spoon and give water and food slowly with a spoon. This has worked very well specially in small children.
A one time diarrhea is a sign of cleaning and really does not need any treatment. Try to work out what was been eaten or drunk in the last 24 hours and avoid the food or the place where eaten.
