BALI'S WONDERFUL KIDS! |
Happy Galungan and Kuningan to all of our readers. We hope all of you are having a wonderful time with your families on this very special holiday here in Bali. Bali has been very busy over the last few weeks and still is. We have meet many families with their kids who enjoyed their Bali holiday a lot. Local and expat kids are almost all back to school again. Green School will open for the first time in a few days and we all look forward to see how students, teachers and parents enjoy the 'green' experience.
Many other events are coming up. Probably the most exciting on in Ubud in October - The Ubud Writer and Reader Festival. This year we are finally in closer contact with the festival and have the full kids program ready on our event calendar or you can go to our Ubud Reader and Writer Program Page and save it. More about the festival on our Ubud Reader and Writer Festival Page from last year.
There will be a new organic market coming up in Seminyak from September 5th at the the Fashion Point. Good luck to all the vendors and we hope all of you will support local organic farming as much as you can! More info on our event calendar...
And don't forget, many places are short with water, so please: SAVE WATER EVERY DAY!
Bumi Sehat Fondraiser goes on and we hope to have an update soon fro Katherine how the Million Mothers is doing. Also I was talking to Ibu Robin lst month and she got these wonderful printed cloth shopping bags she wants to give to each mother coming to Bumi Sehat. We are looking for garment factories who donate material or even do the sewing for the bags, so we can give them to the mother and additional we want to sell the bags all over Bali in shops and supermarkets to raise money for Bumi Sehat and to keep Bali free from more plastic rubbish. Please contact us on: info@baliforkids.com if you want to help us to raise money, if you have left over material or if you want the sell the bags in your place.
From our last months issues: ON BEHALF OF MIDWIFE ROBIN LIM, AUTHOR OF AFTER THE BABY’S BIRTH, AND THE BIRTH CLINIC YAYASAN BUMI SEHAT, PLEASE READ THIS TO THE END AND TAKE ACTION IF YOUR HEART MOVES YOU TO. THEN PASS IT ON… I ASK WITH HOPE AND HUMILITY… FOR THE MOTHERS ON THE ISLAND OF BALI . Please still keep this warning up: A few months ago we warned all of you of the temporary tattoos you can get everywhere around town and beach. Well, another child has now marks on his legs forever because of them. Please, to all of you, pass it on how dangerous these tattoos are. Please do not use them at all. Please read the article on: www.baliforkids.com/health_corner.htm. Please, if you are doing these tattoos think twice if this is the right way to earn your money. People can be harmed for live. Thanks to all of you in spreading the word, just to save a few more kids from this dangerous temporary tattoos and the harm they are doing...
YKIP PROJECTS IN BALI - KUTA INTERNATIONAL DISASTER SCHOLARSHIP - Article by Rucina Ballinger from YKIP
The idea of the Kuta International Disaster Scholarship (KIDS) partnership was formed at a meeting of the Bali Recovery Group at the end of 2002. Yayasan K.I.D.S. had been started by staff of the chain store, COURTS, and was formally registered in December 2002 as a charitable non-profit organization to support the education of children who had lost one or both parents or had a parent who had been permanently injured in the Kuta bombings in October 2002. David Wood, Sara Pramana and a number of volunteers from COURTS instigated the idea to provide scholarships to these children. Mark Keatinge of YKIP had the same idea and a partnership was formed. The shared mission of the two organizations was to ensure that the children of the bomb victims could continue their education as long as they wanted (and funds permitting). A new joint organization called YKIP- YKIDS was formally established on 23 June 2003 with a Memorandum of
Understanding signed by both sides. Based on this agreement, YKIP handles the major fundraising and finances while YKIDS is mainly in charge of outreach. The YKIDS volunteers from COURTS searched for data on the children, visiting all of them in their homes and trying to assist them both morally and materially as well as giving them the courage to think positively and get on with their lives. Other organizations did this as well, and their efforts were consolidated in a database, stored originally with the Bali Hati Foundation, that is now with YKIP. This was organized through the Bali Recovery Group. “ KIDS’s mission is to ensure that the children of the bomb victims could continue their education as long as they wanted ”

Since this project began in 2003, YKIP has have supported 132 children whose parents were either killed or injured in the bombing. The children of injured parents who have since recovered and returned to work are no longer supported by YKIP-YKIDS. The number of children supported decreases as they graduate from school. This program is intended to continue until all children have graduated from university in 2026. In order to keep communications open with all of the bomb victim families, in the beginning YKIDS held “Gathering Parties” every two weeks. This gave the families an anchor to hang onto and a place to get news and support. These meetings then became monthly, quarterly, and starting in 2004 biannual (at the end of every semester) and currently once a year (requested by the victims themselves to save money that would be spent on the party for education). In 2003, on October 13th (one year and one day after the bombings), an International Family Day was held at the Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur. All of the victims and their families from all over the world who attended the first memorial services were present. Games were played, teddy bears distributed, and souvenirs exchanged. This was a very moving event for all involved.
The YKIP-YKIDS field and admin officer, Ni Putu Sherlyana, ensures that school payments are made and all educational costs are reimbursed (such as a family purchasing school supplies for their child). She visits each of the 23 families that live on Bali at least once a semester and the seven families on Java when the opportunity arises. She knows each of the families well and helps them find the most appropriate schools for their children, lends a shoulder and a helping hand and works tirelessly to assist where she can. The project will continue for close to another 20 years and the total amount of scholarship funds expected to be disbursed by 2026 is currently estimated to be Rp. 4,840,600,224 (US$ 537,844). Suffice it to say that figure will fluctuate with inflation and the changing educational needs of the children. We currently have enough funds to ensure that each and every child in this program can continue on through senior high school (and those currently in junior and senior high school can go on to university). We still need funds to guarantee that all of these children can finish their tertiary degrees and become contributing members to their communities.

KUDA P STABLES is in Canggu and a real lovely family horse riding place. Our Bali for Kids.com test team checked out the stables and we found 7 very well looked after horses. Sauce was the pony for our test child. Sauce is 30 years old, but in perfect condition and we got told that she is crazy for small cuts of carrots, so have some with you when you go to Kuda P Stables. The 30 minutes private riding class was very well set up: Warm up with simple exercises for horse and "jockey", little easy movements on the horse, to get familiar with the feeling of being on a horse and a little ride out in the rice fields next door. All safely guided by Fran Putrawan, the Australian/English owner and trainer and her Balinese staff Koman and Ketut, who are helping her with the horses and during the classes. Fran is a so called "Horse-Woman" - She got horses and stables for more than 30 years and cannot keep her fingers off horses. I had a little 45 minutes warm up session on Pablo. Pablo and I knew we did some work after 45 minutes... It was great fun for all of us. What we loved most was the warm, familiar atmosphere in Kuda P stables. Children and adults can experience the horses in a hands on set up. Additional Kuda P is offering Therapeutic Riding for physically and mentally disabled as a form of rehabilitation. To get a ride at Kuda P, check out our Sport - Page

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a practical and learnable process for communicating with respect, honesty, power and compassion. Its purpose is to ensure everyone's real needs are met peacefully, without the use of blame, guilt or coercion. Through its focus on understanding emotions, NVC uses a simple four step process to quickly get to the heart of the matter, resolving misunderstandings and conflict. ~ assert yourself without hurting others ~ free yourself from destructive, negative thinking ~ transform anger into connection with others ~ eat by choice, not by habit. Dorset recommends getting familiar with NVC before attending this workshop.
